Nantucket in 3 Days: Must-See Spots and Hidden

If you plan to visit Nantucket in 3 days, check out our must-see spots and hidden gems. Nestled 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, this charming island — known for its cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and stunning coastal scenery — feels like a world away. Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, or simply looking to unwind, Nantucket offers something for everyone.

Getting to Nantucket

To get to Nantucket, take a ferry from the mainland or fly directly to the island’s local airport.

  • Hyline offers a high-speed ferry service from Hyannis that whisks you to the island in an hour.
  • If you plan on taking a vehicle, your only option is to take the Steamship Authority’s traditional ferry, a 2-hour- and 15-minute leisurely cruise across Nantucket Sound.
  • But, if traveling by boat doesn’t interest you, multiple airlines offer direct flights from Boston, Cape Cod, New York, and New Jersey.

Once you arrive, here’s how to see the best of Nantucket in 3 days.

Day 1: Immerse Yourself in History and Charm

Morning: Exploring Downtown Nantucket

Wake to a delightful and healthy continental breakfast, enjoyed in your choice of our breakfast room, lounge, or outside on our garden patio. Then, start your adventure in the heart of Nantucket.

Wander the cobblestone streets of downtown, where you’ll find a mix of high-end boutiques, quaint shops, historic homes, and the incredible yachts docked along Straight Wharf and moored in the boat basin.

Must-See: Whaling Museum

Begin your day with a visit to the Whaling Museum. Located on Broad Street, this museum offers a fascinating glimpse into Nantucket’s whaling past. Among the exhibits, you’ll find a massive sperm whale skeleton, a restored 1847 candle factory, and an impressive collection of authentic Nantucket Lightship baskets and scrimshaw. Take the elevator to the 6th-floor observation deck for a fantastic view of Nantucket Harbor.

Lunch: Straight Wharf Restaurant

For lunch, head to the Straight Wharf Restaurant. Situated by the harbor, this eatery offers fresh seafood with a view. Try their clam chowder or lobster roll for an authentic taste of Nantucket.

Afternoon: Brant Point Lighthouse and Jetties Beach

After lunch, rent a bike and ride to Brant Point Lighthouse, one of the most photographed landmarks on the island. It’s an excellent spot for a photo op.

Along the way, you’ll pass the White Elephant, a historic hotel on the water. Stop in for a cocktail and check out the view. Then, continue your ride to Jetties Beach, a family-friendly beach with calm waters, perfect for a leisurely afternoon and a cool dip in the ocean.

Dinner: The Nautilus

For dinner, reserve a table at The Nautilus. Known for its innovative seafood dishes and vibrant atmosphere, it’s a favorite among locals and visitors. Don’t miss their signature small plates and creative cocktails.

Day 2: Nature and Relaxation

Morning: Siasconset Village and Sankaty Head Light

Begin your second day with a trip to Siasconset (or, as the locals call it, ‘Sconset). This charming village on the east end of the island played a significant role in Nantucket’s early whaling days. Today, its charm lies in the delightful rose-covered cottages, unique shops, and lovely restaurants.

Must-See: Sankaty Head Lighthouse

From the heart of town, walk or bike to Sankaty Head Lighthouse. This iconic red-and-white striped lighthouse offers breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean. Built in 1850 and moved in 2007 due to the eroding bluff on which it sits, the light continues to operate as a navigational signal. It’s stunning at sunrise or sunset.

Lunch: Claudette’s Sandwich Shop

Enjoy a casual lunch at Claudette’s, which is known for its delicious sandwiches and friendly service. Try their famous meatloaf sandwich served with the house sauce, a blend of mayo, spicy brown mustard, and horseradish.

Afternoon: Madaket Beach and Millie’s

Ride the Polpis Road bike path back into town and head out to Madaket Beach on the island’s western end. Known for its soft sand and rolling waves, it’s a great spot for body surfing or just lying back and listening to the waves crashing on shore.

Dinner: Millie’s Restaurant

After an afternoon of frolicking in the surf, make a reservation for dinner at Millie’s Restaurant. Known for its eclectic menu featuring New England favorites and inventive cocktails, it’s a great place to relax while waiting for the sunset. Try the fish tacos paired with a Madaket Mule to unwind after a day in the sun.
